Beirut - The Paris of the Middle East

One of the oldest cities in the world, Beirut has been inhabited for more than 5000 years. A Phoenician port, Roman colony, an Ottoman city before becoming the cosmopolitan capital of modern Lebanon. Its streets and skyline reflect the many civilizations that have shaped it.

For centuries, Beirut has stood at the crossroads of the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Phoenician sailors and traders once set out from its shores, while Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Crusader, Ottoman and French influences have each left their mark on the city. Beneath the modern streets lie layers of this remarkable history.

In the decades after Lebanese independence, Beirut became known as The Paris of the Middle East celebrated for its caft's, nightlife, culture, commerce and distinctly cosmopolitan character. Its Mediterranean setting and blend of Eastern and Western influences made it one of the region's great cultural capitals.
